Current Solutions
Until now, the uphill slope of your driveway would severely limit your options for a gate. Your only options would be:
Set back gate
The gate is set back up the driveway so the gate can open outwards (it is illegal to have the gate open over the footpath). This is expensive as you need extra fencing, and means that you cannot have use of your entire property. It also creates a dark corner for potential intruders.
Off set hinge
This method uses an off set hinge that raises the lower edge of the gate. However, when they are open; the gates are left on an odd looking unsightly angle and they protrude into the driveway.
Leaving a gap
The last, and least appealing method currently used to deal with an upward sloping driveway is to leave a large gap between the driveway and the gate which allows the gate to clear the slope. Not only is this approach extremely unattractive, it removes much of the security aspect of the gate.
Sliding gate
This type of gate is extremely expensive and requires a large amount of room to open. They are also dangerous for children and pets.
Levelling the ground
This method requires major earthworks; it also means that the remaining driveway is much steeper than before. This is a complicated and very expensive technique.
